What is a Nutraceutical?
A nutraceutical combines “nutra” (nutrient) and “ceutical” (pharmaceutical) – essentially foods or supplements with health-promoting, disease-preventing, or medicinal benefits beyond basic nutrition. Nutraceuticals focus on prevention rather than cure and offer potential health improvements without the side effects of pharmaceuticals.
Evidence of Efficacy is Essential
When choosing nutraceuticals, look for products backed by clinical trials, not just testimonials or marketing claims. A recent study showed that 55% of owners felt significant improvement in their dog’s mobility when giving a placebo, and 40% of veterinarians also fell for caregiver placebo effects. This highlights why evidence-based choices matter — and why we’ve gone through the actual published trials behind each Australian brand below, rather than relying on the claims on the box.
Tips for Choosing the Right Nutraceutical
The ACCLAIM Strategy for Evaluating Products:
- A – Company name you recognise; established firm providing veterinary educational materials
- C – Clinical experience; companies investing in clinical trials published in respected journals
- C – Content; all ingredients clearly indicated on label with amounts listed
- L – Label claims; if they sound too good to be true, they probably are. References to clinical trials are better than testimonials. Avoid labels claiming to “treat,” “cure,” or “prevent” arthritis
- A – Administration; dose recommendations should be accurate and easy to calculate
- I – Product identification number; batch numbers indicating quality surveillance
- M – Manufacturer information and website link
Additional Selection Tips:
- Trial and error may be needed – try different types and observe for improvement
- Stick to recommended dosing; loading doses are often recommended
- Buy the largest box possible for economy, especially powder forms for large dogs
- Check for food allergies if using flavoured chews
- Look for glucosamine hydrochloride NOT sulfate (better absorption into synovial tissue)
- Expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better – research cost per day
Safety and Quality Considerations
Nutraceutical Industry Reality: The supplement market is largely unregulated. The International Centre for Nutritional Excellence found 6 out of 10 human joint supplements failed to meet label claims. Products may not contain what they state on the label.

When to Start Nutraceuticals
Important: These nutraceuticals work best when started early in your dog’s life as a preventative measure, rather than waiting until arthritis symptoms appear.
Timing Guidelines:
- Breeds predisposed to arthritis: as early as 8 weeks of age
- Generally: around 1 year of age when dogs stop growing
- High-activity dogs: based on activity level and joint stress
- Early intervention: more preventative than curative
Evidence-Based Nutraceutical Options by Active Ingredient
Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oil) – Most Evidence-Based
- What it is: EPA and DHA from wild-caught coldwater fish
- How it works: Reduces inflammation in joints and may prevent arthritis progression
- Dose: 100mg/kg/day combined EPA and DHA for osteoarthritis
- Clinical Evidence: Studies show some dogs receiving carprofen needed less medication when also given fish oil omega-3s
- Important: Avoid flaxseed oil – only 10% converts to usable omega-3 in dogs
- Products: Welactin (Nutramax), veterinary-grade fish oil supplements
Important Note About Human Omega-3 Products: While human fish oil supplements may seem cost-effective, they’re often impractical for dogs. The required dose for joint health is 100mg/kg/day combined EPA and DHA. For a 50kg dog, this equals approximately 25 human capsules twice daily (depending on brand concentration).
Why veterinary products are better:
- Veterinary products offer higher concentrations per dose
- Human products often work out more expensive due to the large number of capsules required
- Veterinary brands provide professional support if concerns arise
- Some human formulations contain ingredients that may be harmful to pets
Green-Lipped Mussel Oil (Perna canaliculus)
- What it is: Extract from New Zealand green-lipped mussels containing natural omega-3s and compounds similar to chondroitin
- How it works: Natural anti-inflammatory properties, contains more than 90 free fatty acids including DHA, EPA, and ETA
- Dose: 77mg/kg body weight daily
- Clinical Evidence: A 2013 study found increased plasma omega-3 fatty acids and improved peak vertical force in dogs
Australian products and how they stack up:
- Antinol / Antinol Rapid (EAB-277) – a combination of green-lipped mussel oil and krill oil. In a 2024 blinded, placebo-controlled trial of 101 dogs with hip osteoarthritis, EAB-277 produced a significantly greater improvement in objective weight-bearing than placebo, performing comparably to the NSAID meloxicam. This is one of the better-supported supplements on the Australian market. Recommended.
- Sasha’s Blend – combines stabilised green-lipped mussel powder, abalone powder, and shark cartilage in a 3:1:1 ratio, with green-lipped mussel as the dominant ingredient. It draws on the same broad green-lipped mussel evidence base as Antinol, though the abalone and shark cartilage components haven’t been tested as standalone ingredients to the same degree.
- Glyde Mobility Chews – an Australian-made (Sydney) vet-channel chew combining green-lipped mussel (760mg), sodium chondroitin sulfate (285mg), and glucosamine hydrochloride (570mg) per chew. Made by Parnell Living Science, founded by veterinarians in Sydney, it sits in a similar evidence space to the other GLM-based products, with the added glucosamine/chondroitin layered on top.
- 4Cyte / 4Cyte Canine (Epiitalis) – worth a closer look, because its main active ingredient isn’t actually green-lipped mussel. The patented ingredient, Epiitalis (a Biota orientalis seed oil extract), is the primary active; GLM, abalone, and marine cartilage are included as supporting ingredients. The often-quoted Melbourne University study (Beths et al. 2020) was an open-label pilot with no placebo group, and the authors stated the encouraging results would be used to develop a follow-up placebo-controlled trial. That follow-up has now been done: the 2024 placebo-controlled comparison found 4CYTE’s effect on objective weight-bearing did not differ significantly from placebo, although it did score better than placebo on the subjective orthopaedic assessment. Recommended, with this caveat in mind — it’s still a reasonable option, particularly for its anti-inflammatory and chondrocyte-support mechanism, but the gait-analysis evidence is currently weaker than Antinol’s.
- Note: Only New Zealand mussels are effective; farmed mussels have questionable efficacy.
Rosehip (GOPO) – Limited Canine-Specific Evidence
- What it is: Powder made from the seeds and husks of Rosa canina (dog rose) hips; the patented active compound is GOPO
- How it works: Proposed anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action, reducing chemotaxis of inflammatory cells
- Products: Rose-Hip Vital Canine
- The evidence: In humans, a 2008 meta-analysis found rosehip powder had a small to moderate effect on osteoarthritis pain, and a more recent 2018 systematic review found moderate-quality evidence for improved pain and stiffness, but no significant effect on physical function or quality of life. The canine-specific evidence is much thinner: the manufacturer’s own published evidence consists of a single randomised, placebo-controlled trial presented at the 2010 OARSI conference and published only as a supplement abstract in Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, rather than a full peer-reviewed canine RCT in a veterinary journal.
- Our view: Not currently recommended. The marketing claims for Rose-Hip Vital outpace the strength of the dog-specific evidence, and several other options on this list (Antinol, omega-3s, 4Cyte) have more robust trial data behind them in dogs specifically.
Glucosamine Hydrochloride + Chondroitin Sulfate
- What it is: Building blocks of cartilage matrix that stimulate cartilage cell growth
- How it works: Glucosamine rebuilds cartilage; chondroitin inhibits cartilage-destroying enzymes
- Dose: 15mg/kg maintenance (500–1000mg for a 75lb dog)
- Loading dose: 2x maintenance for 4–6 weeks required to reach therapeutic levels
- Clinical Evidence: A randomised, double-blind, positive-controlled multicentre trial of 35 dogs with confirmed osteoarthritis showed statistically significant improvements in pain scores and weight-bearing by day 70
- Important: Use glucosamine hydrochloride NOT sulfate (better absorption into synovial tissue)
- A note on the broader evidence: Two systematic reviews of veterinary nutraceuticals (Vandeweerd et al. 2012, Barbeau-Grégoire et al. 2022) found evidence for clinical efficacy of omega-3 fatty acids in canine OA, and weak efficacy for collagen, but neither found evidence that the glucosamine hydrochloride and chondroitin sulphate combination provided any beneficial effect. The 2007 McCarthy trial referenced above is positive, but it sits against a backdrop of more recent reviews that are less convinced about this ingredient class as a whole.
Australian products and how they stack up:
- Dasuquin (Nutramax) – industry leader and pioneer in joint supplements; uses glucosamine hydrochloride. Primarily available in Australia via personal importation rather than mainstream local vet-channel stocking.
- ZamiPet Joint Protect – contains glucosamine hydrochloride, chondroitin sulphate, MSM, and hyaluronic acid, made with Australian-sourced chicken. Uses the HCl form, in line with the absorption note above.
- PAW Osteocare (Blackmores) – contains 500mg glucosamine sulphate and 250mg chondroitin sulfate per chew, plus MSM and a vitamin/mineral blend. Worth noting this uses the sulphate form rather than hydrochloride, which the absorption evidence above favours less.
Avocado Soybean Unsaponifiables (ASUs)
- What it is: Oil extracts that protect cartilage matrix
- How it works: Inhibits key mediators of osteoarthritis structural changes
- Dose: 300mg every 3 days (from studies), but daily dosing recommended based on body weight
- Clinical Evidence: Studies show efficacy similar to NSAIDs but with delayed onset; stimulates healing of joint defects in canine knees
- Synergy: Works synergistically with glucosamine/chondroitin and reduces chondroitin requirements
- Products: Dasuquin Advanced (contains ASUs)
Eggshell Membrane
- What it is: Contains high concentrations of glucosamine, chondroitin, collagen, and hyaluronic acid
- Clinical Evidence: Good human studies demonstrate efficacy; no published dog studies yet
- Products: Movoflex (Virbac) – recently launched veterinary product
Undenatured Type II Collagen (UC-II)
- What it is: Collected from chicken sternums
- How it works: Prevents cartilage damage
- Administration: Most effective when given separately from other supplements (different meal time)
- Clinical Evidence: Studies show it acts to prevent damage to cartilage
Boswellia Serrata
- What it is: Tree extract with NSAID-like effects
- Dose: 50mg/kg
- Clinical Evidence: A 2004 study showed a statistically significant reduction in osteoarthritis signs after 6 weeks
- Note: Study was unblinded and not placebo-controlled
MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)
- What it is: Commonly included in joint supplement combinations
- Evidence: No published research on use in dogs specifically
Important Warning About Curcumin/Turmeric: While one study showed curcumin inhibited inflammation-related processes in dogs, standard extracts are not well-absorbed in dogs, making this a less effective supplement. Turmeric, from which curcumin is derived, is not safe or efficacious for pet health on its own. Simply sprinkling turmeric spice powder on food is very unlikely to have any effect and may cause harm.

- Proven: Clinically proven to improve mobility in arthritic dogs
Royal Canin Mobility
- Formulation: Contains EPA/DHA, glucosamine, and chondroitin
- Purpose: Supports joint health and mobility

- Greater supplement amounts per meal ensuring clinical benefit
- Well-balanced formulations
- More affordable and convenient than separate supplements
- Balanced with other key nutrients
The Bottom Line
The joint supplement market can feel overwhelming, and that’s without factoring in the gap between what’s on the label and what the science actually says. The honest summary is this: omega-3 fatty acids have the strongest evidence base in dogs, green-lipped mussel products have good clinical support, and the rest sit somewhere on a spectrum between promising and under-studied. Some popular products are backed by solid research; others are backed by solid marketing. Knowing the difference matters, especially when you’re spending money on something your dog will be taking for years.
A few things I’d take away from everything above. Start early — joint supplements work best as prevention, not rescue. The dog that’s already severely arthritic gets less out of a supplement than the five-year-old Labrador whose joints are still in reasonable shape. Choose products that use glucosamine hydrochloride rather than sulfate if you’re going down the glucosamine route. If you’re looking for the product I personally reach for first, it’s Antinol — it has the strongest clinical trial evidence of any supplement currently available in Australia, a good safety profile, and suits long-term use. And if you’re wondering about Rosehip products like Rose-Hip Vital, I’d save your money — the dog-specific evidence simply isn’t there to back the marketing claims.
None of this replaces a proper conversation about your dog’s individual situation. A dog with mild stiffness at seven is a different patient to a dog with confirmed hip OA at twelve, and the supplement strategy should reflect that.
